Winter Walk – 2015
Location: Snowdonia, UK
Date: February 14th, 2015
The weekend of Feb 14th saw seventeen BMRES members, associates and partners congregate in Snowdonia for the annual BMRES winter walk weekend 2015. Whilst accommodation varied from hotel to Climbers Club hut via members cottage and hostel, the venue for the Saturday night dinner was more firmly based at the excellent Bryn Tyrch Hotel in Capel Curig. Saturday dawned overcast with a cloud base at 2000ft but with flashes of sunshine to be enjoyed at the beginning and end of the day. Starting from the Watkins path car park, avoiding the exorbitant parking fees at Pen Y Pass but committing to an extra 1200ft of ascent (a delicate balance), we made a brisk ascent (well I thought it was) of the Y Aran ridge to Snowdon summit with hard packed snow underfoot to add further interest After a freezing break for a snack sheltering under the eaves of the summit cafe a crampon assisted descent along the horseshoe path was followed by an enjoyable scramble up Lliwedd. We continued our descent past the normal exit of the horseshoe path from the ridge and were greeted by sunshine and spectacular 360 degree views from the Wenault ridge across Snowdonia to the sea. There was then a steep scramble to the abandoned copper mine to pick up the path winding around the south west side of Lliwedd to meet up with the lower reaches of the Watkins track. Full use of the day had been made as dusk was gathering as we reached the cars.
A very enjoyable meal and drinks were partaken by all at the Bryn Tyrch Inn, definitely providing a serious challenge to the other Hostelries in the Snowdon area.
Wall to wall sunshine the following day made for difficult decisions, further playtime in Snowdonia or a mad dash to salvage some points having abandoned ones loved one on Valentines Day. Some chose to play whilst others looked to their conscience but all had a great weekend!
