The 2026 BMRES winter walk to Llanberis was a true reminder of the character of the Welsh mountains in the darker months. The forecast was far from inviting, with persistent rain, strong winds, and low cloud anticipated: I doubt many would have ventured far had the meeting not been in the diaries for months. So on a wet, dark and blustery Friday night in February, various members of the Society convened at The Royal Victoria Hotel at the foot of Llanberis Pass, to regale tales of expeditions, research updates and generally catch up on the previous few months since our Nepal expedition.

Saturday brought us more rain and inclement conditions and 18 hardy (foolish?) souls gathered in the foyer. An early breakaway group (Jo and Kyle) jumped onto the van and head to the coast for a drier experience, while the true grit and ever-optimistic remainers set off, using the opportunity to don every item of goretex and weatherproof in their possessions.

Throughout the day, Snowdon remained hidden from view, its summit shrouded in dense mist and cloud, leaving only occasional glimpses of the lower slopes. But it was a pleasure to spend time with chums, great to see expedition members again (Owen returning after several missed outings) and enjoyable to welcome some new ones to the group. No damp spirits, only damp clothes, as we completed a circuit of Moel Eilio, and returned to Lanberis for a well earned pint and more jollity.

A pre-dinner meeting on the Saturday evening, Chaired by Jo, provided an update on Society activities, and discussions on future expedition plans and  ideas. This was followed by a sumptuous dinner, thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Excellent food, lively conversation, much laughter, and a selection of quality wines rounded off the evening perfectly.

Although the mountains denied us the views or summits we might have hoped for, the shared enjoyment of the weekend ensured that it was another memorable and successful winter walk. My thanks to Amy for coordinating the weekend.
