Mt. Everest, Nepal – 1993

Spring at the beginning and end and snow at higher altitude made this a memorable trek in the famous Nepalese approach to Everest through Namche, past Ama Dablam, through Pheriche to Gorak Shep (5164m).

Experiments included measurement of changes in intracranial pressure with collaboration with R J Marchbanks at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, London, the effects of exercise (using Pugh’s bicycle ergometer – see Pugh LGCE et al J Appl Physiol 1964; 19: 431-440), the treatment of mountain sickness with acute acetazolamide, and, in collaboration with Professor Tooke, capillary pressure and permeability changes with studies of albuminuria. The enhanced rate of ascent brought to light an interesting example of march haemoglobinuria in one member of the party.
